What Are Dental Bridges?
A dental bridge is a fixed prosthetic device used to replace one or more missing teeth by literally “bridging” the gap between existing teeth. The bridge consists of artificial teeth (called pontics) that are anchored to the natural teeth or dental implants on either side of the gap (called abutments). Unlike removable dentures, dental bridges are permanently cemented into place and function like natural teeth. They’re typically made from materials such as porcelain, ceramic, or metal alloys, with porcelain being the most popular choice due to its natural appearance and ability to match the color of your existing teeth.
Types of Dental Bridges Available
There are several types of dental bridges, each designed for specific situations and patient needs. Traditional bridges are the most common type, where crowns are placed on the teeth adjacent to the gap and connected to the replacement tooth. Cantilever bridges are used when there’s only one natural tooth next to the missing tooth, though these are less common due to the increased stress on the supporting tooth. Maryland bridges, also called resin-bonded bridges, use a metal or porcelain framework bonded to the back of adjacent teeth, making them less invasive but also less durable. Implant-supported bridges are anchored to dental implants rather than natural teeth, providing the strongest and most stable option, especially for replacing multiple consecutive missing teeth.
The Dental Bridge Procedure Process
Getting a dental bridge typically requires two to three appointments over several weeks. During the first visit, your dentist will prepare the abutment teeth by removing a portion of enamel to make room for the crowns that will support the bridge. Impressions of your teeth are then taken to create a custom bridge in a dental laboratory. A temporary bridge is placed to protect the prepared teeth while your permanent bridge is being crafted. At the second appointment, the temporary bridge is removed, and the new permanent bridge is carefully fitted and adjusted for proper bite and comfort. Once everything is perfectly aligned, the bridge is permanently cemented into place, restoring both function and appearance to your smile.
Benefits and Care for Your Dental Bridge
Dental bridges offer numerous advantages beyond simply filling the gap left by missing teeth. They restore your ability to chew and speak properly, maintain the shape of your face by preventing remaining teeth from shifting into the empty space, and distribute bite forces evenly across your mouth. With proper care, a dental bridge can last 10 to 15 years or even longer. Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial for the longevity of your bridge, including regular brushing, flossing (using special floss threaders to clean under the bridge), and routine dental checkups. While the initial investment may seem significant, dental bridges are often more cost-effective than other tooth replacement options and provide excellent long-term value for restoring both oral health and confidence in your smile.
